Aqueous Metal Oxide Batteries: A Non-Toxic Alternative to Lithium-Ion Batteries
According to Alsym Energy, aqueous metal oxide batteries are a non-toxic alternative to lithium-ion batteries that use manganese and other metal oxides. These batteries use water as the primary solvent in the electrolyte and the manufacturing of the electrodes.
Lithium-ion batteries contain critical raw materials such as lithium, graphite, cobalt, and manganese. Other toxic metals in lithium-ion batteries include: Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LipF) salts, Nickel, Chromium, Thallium, and Silver.

Lithium batteries contain many toxic materials, including lithium compounds, nickel compounds, arsenic compounds, and dimethoxyethane. Lithium can also react violently with moisture, water, steam, oxidizing agents, combustibles, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, metals, metal alloys, metal salts, strong acids, and reducing agents.
