While researching and developing sodium-ion batteries, enterprises are also actively laying out lithium battery capacity!
Follow me on:
Although the research and development and production of sodium-ion batteries are gradually on track, the major lithium companies do not give up the signs of lithium batteries but continue to actively lay out the construction of lithium battery capacity.
No matter which one it is, it is good news for ZESHENG.
Because both sodium-ion batteries, and lithium-ion batteries, need to use NMP (N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone) solvent in the coating stage.
Next, look at the editorially compiled, the layout of major companies for lithium battery production capacity in 2022.
Grab market share and welcome the TWh era
From January to September 2022, CATL, EVE, Fu-energy Technology, and Gotion High-Tech released their plans for new lithium battery production capacity one after another.
- According to CATL’s announcement, CATL’s battery system capacity in the first half of 2022 was 154.25GWh, an increase of 135.68% year-on-year.
From January to September 2022, CATL announced five lithium battery capacity projects, including the domestic projects of the Xiamen Times New Energy Battery Industrial Base Project, Jining New Energy Battery Industrial Base Project, and Luoyang New Energy Battery Production Base Project, all of which build power battery system and energy storage system production lines.
Overseas projects include Indonesia’s power battery industry chain project, and Hungary Times’ new energy battery industry base project, the former contains a ternary battery production line, and the latter proposed to build an annual output of 100GWh power battery system production line.
SNE Research forecasts that CATL’s production capacity will reach 646GWh in 2025 and 1,285GWh in 2030.
- According to EVE’s announcement, as of the end of June 2022, the lithium battery capacity of EVE is about 31GWh.
From January to October 2022, the company announced 5 lithium battery capacity projects one after another, of which 4 new domestic projects have a combined capacity of 110GWh.
The foreign project is a cylindrical lithium battery manufacturing project in Malaysia, which intends to build a series of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for power tools, two-wheelers, and cleaning tools.
According to the forecast of SNE Research, the production capacity of EVE will reach 170GWh in 2025 and 422GWh in 2030.
- According to Farasis’s announcement, Farasis currently has a total of 21GWh lithium battery capacity in Zhenjiang Phase I, Phase II, and Ganzhou plant, and is expected to increase its capacity by the end of 2022 as Zhenjiang Phase III capacity is successfully put into operation in the fourth quarter.
From January to September 2022, the company announced 4 lithium battery projects with a total capacity of 75GWh.
Currently, the company’s 330wh/kg high energy density lithium battery has been certified by a third party in the U.S. and can be used globally.
According to SNE Research’s forecast, Farasis’s production capacity will reach 94GWh by 2025 and 205GWh by 2030.
- According to Great Power’s announcement, since 2019, the lithium battery capacity utilization rate of Great Power has exceeded 100%, and the company is actively expanding its production construction.
Since 2022, Great Power’s new capacity planning project 2, to invest 12 billion yuan, capacity planning a total of 40GWh, including power battery and energy storage lithium battery projects.
- According to Gotion High-Tech’s announcement, Gotion High-Tech is expected to achieve 100GWh lithium battery capacity by the end of 2022.
From January to October 2022, Gotion High-Tech added 4 new capacity planning projects, with a total capacity planning of 90GWh.
According to SNEResearch’s forecast, Gotion High-Tech’s capacity will reach 174GWh in 2025 and 523GWh in 2030.
Major manufacturers are actively expanding their battery production capacity, and the global lithium battery production capacity is expected to steadily increase in the future.
According to SNE Research, the global lithium battery capacity is expected to grow from 994GWh to 8247GWh from 2021 to 2030, with a CAGR of 27%. Among them, the global production capacity is expected to be 1273GWh by the end of 2022, with a year-on-year growth of 28%; the production capacity of 4055GWh is expected to be realized by the end of 2025, and the global lithium battery production capacity is expected to be released continuously in the future.
In addition, according to the editor, CATL has also locked the supply of 800,000 tons of upstream lithium aluminum foil for lithium batteries in advance.
CATL is developing sodium-ion batteries while booking more than 800,000 tons of lithium-ion aluminum foil in advance!
As a leading unit of lithium power companies, CATL not only has long been developing and preparing to start mass production of sodium-ion batteries in 2023 but also does not relax about the market share of lithium-ion batteries. It is understood that at the end of November, Anhui Zhongji signed an agreement with CATL, promising to supply lithium aluminum foil to CATL during 2023-2026, with a minimum supply volume of 320,000 tons in total.
Based on 450 tons of aluminum foil for 1GWh lithium batteries, the above order can meet CATL’s aluminum foil needs for the production of approximately 711GWh lithium batteries.
As early as December 2021, Dingsheng New Material also issued an announcement that the company and its wholly-owned subsidiary Wuxing Aluminum intend to supply power battery aluminum foil to CATL from November 1, 2021, to December 31, 2025, with a total minimum supply of 512,000 tons.
This means that the lithium battery aluminum foil in CATL’s hands last year may not be enough, so this year, while the end of the year, another batch has been booked in advance. This minimum supply of 830,000 tons of lithium battery aluminum foil can meet the production needs of about 1850GWh of lithium batteries. Looking at the above layout of CATL in 2022, SNE Research’s prediction is not false, CATL’s production capacity will reach 646GWh in 2025 and 1,285GWh in 2030.
Not only CATL has started to “arm”, Svolt, BYD, EVE, Gotion High-Tech and other battery companies are also laying out a variety of supply long list, it is expected that the new energy industry materials companies will usher in a new wave of development opportunities.
