Thanksgiving, a national holiday in the United States and Canada, located in North America, is of Christian origin.
The purpose is to give thanks to God for the past year’s gifts and bountiful harvest. The timing of Thanksgiving is not the same in Canada and the United States.
- Canada
In 1620, a passenger ship, the Mayflower, arrived from Plymouth to the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts full of Puritans (Calvinists).
That winter, many people died of hunger and cold. With the help of the local aborigines, the new settlers learned to hunt, grow corn and pumpkins, and had a bountiful harvest the following year.
On the day of the harvest, the newcomers from Europe took the traditional Thanksgiving form of the English Reformation and invited the native people to come and give thanks for God’s blessings, which became the origin of American Thanksgiving.
In 1879, Canada was the first to establish the date of Thanksgiving Day, which was set on the second Monday of October every year, the same as Columbus Day in the United States.
