[Ford Motor and SK On revoke the joint venture agreement signed in March]

On Jan. 9, Korea Economic Daily reported that Ford Motor and SK On (SKI Battery subsidiary) recently withdrew a preliminary agreement for a power battery joint venture plant that they signed in March 2022, citing sources familiar with the matter.

In March 2022, SK On, Ford, and Turkish partner Koc Holding A.S. signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in building an electric vehicle battery plant near the Turkish capital Ankara.

SK On has previously planned to start purchasing equipment in the second half of 2023 and expects to start production in 2025, building a total of 18 production lines with an initial annual capacity of 30 GWh and an expected future capacity of up to 45 GWh. This is part of Ford’s plan to produce 2 million electric vehicles per year by 2026.

As for the reason for withdrawing the plan for the joint venture, the Korea Economic Daily said it was based on rising global interest rates and weak demand for electric vehicles in Europe.

SK On responded, however, that it has not yet decided whether to stop talks on an electric vehicle battery joint venture with Ford in Turkey. “The company is reviewing the memorandum of understanding as part of its selection and concentration strategy in the electric vehicle battery business,” SK On spokesman said.
