As we’ve talked about before, BYD’s new EV Seal is powered by the latest technology and the latest blade battery for fast charging. Recently, Enovix in the United States also announced that their silicon lithium-ion battery 0.27AhEV battery can be charged from 0% to 80% within just 5.2 minutes; and can be charged to 98% within ten minutes. The United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) once had a goal: to achieve 80% charge in 15 minutes. Now, this goal is directly achieved by Enovix. The Fremont, California-based company has not only surpassed that goal, their fast-charging batteries can be cycled more than 1,000 times. When the battery is charged more than 1,000 times, the battery can still maintain 93% of its capacity.
And the USABC’s other goals at the battery level: a usable energy density of 550Wh/L, a survival temperature range of -40 to +66 degrees Celsius, and a cost of $75/kWh for 250,000 units of annual output, Enovix’s power batteries all match. Enovix’s silicon lithium-ion cells also incorporate novel 3D architectures and confinement systems; these cells contain a 100% active silicon anode, a battery material long considered an important technology for next-generation battery anodes.
Will silicon anodes be a breakthrough for future power batteries? ! After all, silicon anodes theoretically hold more than twice the storage capacity of graphite anodes (a material used in all lithium-ion batteries today). It is 1800mAh/cm3 vs 800mAh/cm3.

Another place that Enovix is very commendable is that the high energy density of silicon has four major technical problems to be solved, but Enovix has solved these technical problems through their technical team. Therefore, the silicon anode lithium-ion battery developed by Enovix can not only achieve fast charging within ten minutes, but also maintain a high cycle life. Let’s see which four technical problems were solved:
- Issues with battery swelling on first charge: A stainless steel restraint system around the battery limits battery swelling; Enovix reorients the electrodes so that they face a small portion of the battery to reduce the amount of restraint required by the battery.
- The problem with first-charge efficiency: Batteries use a “pre-lithiation” process during manufacture to insert an additional source of lithium to supplement the lithium captured during formation. Enovix’s silicon-lithium-ion batteries can actually do this, because the extra lithium only needs to travel a small distance in the 3D architecture to penetrate the anode.
- Issues with Circulatory Swelling: Enovix manages circulatory-induced swelling through its integrated constraints, limiting swelling to <2% cell thickness after 500 cycles.
- Issues with cycle life: The integrated constraints keep the particles at a constant stack pressure, limiting particle electrical disconnection and cracking.
Ashok Lahiri, co-founder and CTO of Enovix, is confident in the unique architecture of their batteries. According to Lahiri, “We can improve battery performance today using the same chemistries, but more importantly, we can accelerate the industry’s roadmap.”
